Gilbert Arenas was a second-round draft pick out of the University of Arizona by the Golden State Warriors in the 2001 NBA draft. He later joined the Washington Wizards as a point guard/shooting guard, and has done well for himself. In his second year with the Warriors, Arenas was named the NBA's Most Improved Player and Most Valuable Player in the Rookie-Sophomore Game during the All Star weekend.
With numerous NBA teams showing interest in him during his third year, he chose to sign with the Washington Wizards. Arenas recently showed his commitment to the Washington Wizards by signing a six-year contract for a lesser amount. He signed for $111 million instead of $127 million in order to make funds available for the team to secure other players to make them title contenders this year. Making Arenas even happier, the Wizards also re-signed his teammate and friend Antawn Jamison to a $50 million, 4-year contract.
During his NBA tenure, Arenas has set two records. One was set in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers on December 17, 2006. He scored the most points in overtime (16). The other record was for scoring the most points in 30 minutes (46) since the creation of the shot clock. Arenas has also had three fifty-plus point games, 26 forty-plus point games (25 with Washington), and three triple-doubles in regular season games as well as one forty-plus point game in the Playoffs.
Arenas is known for speaking his mind, making quirky predictions, nicknaming himself and throwing his game jersey into the crowd after each game. As an asset to the NBA, Arenas has contributed an average of 22.8 points, 5.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game in his seven years in the league.
