The 2006-2007 season started on a positive note for the Washington Wizards. But the team started the season with a record of 0-8 before regrouping to go 22-9 during December and January. Injuries to key players thwarted their drive and they were swept 4-0 in the Easter Conference playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Wizards began the 2007-2008 season with an 0-5 record before winning six in a row. Gilbert Arenas, suffering a knee injury the season before, was hobbled again with a torn medial meniscus in his loeft knee. Added to this, Caron Butler suffered a labral tear. Even so, Washington hung on to a 43-39 record for the season and a first round playoff spot against the Cleveland Cavaliers for the third time in a row. Plagued by injuries, the Wizards were swept by Cleveland 4-0.
This season, Gilbert Arenas signed a contract with the Wizards for $111 million dollars. Along with Arenas, Carol Butler, and Antawn Jamison hope to continue with their high scoring performances but will be challenged by a new threesome in Nick Young, Andray Blatche, and Dominic McGuire who claim to be the “new Big Three right here.”
This trio will be joined by a rookie first round draft pick, JaVale McGee, a seven footer who played at the University of Nevada. Without further injuries, all of these players are expected to join the regular season rotation with the Wizards. A question still remains as to Dee Brown, a veteran contender for the third point guard position, who has looked promising in summer league activity.
