Watch the Wizards

The Washington Wizards may not have always been known as the Washington Wizards, but they have been around for a long time. The team first began in 1961 as the Chicago Packers. They have changed locations and team names over the years, but the heart of the basketball team still exists. The team has been at the bottom of the NBA and also at the top. They won the NBA Championship in 1978. This was a time when no one thought they could possibly win.

Fast forward many years to 2008. At the beginning of this season the team came out strong having kept many of its key players including Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison. In addition, they drafted many highly desired players. Unfortunately, the team has been plagued with injury. Jamison required knee surgery that kept him out of several games. A couple other players also suffered injury. Overall, the team has a lot of ability, but demonstrates deficits in their overall defensive play skills. They have recognized their weaknesses and have been practicing even harder and longer.

One thing has not changed for the Wizards. Their devotion to basketball keeps them steadily growing a fan base. They are often the underdogs who must work hard than most to prevail. Many times, they prove people wrong by making phenomenal comebacks. Who knows what the rest of the 2008-2009 season will bring. This team has developed flexibility, stronger communication, and a need for outstanding teamwork no matter whether they are a starter or not. They have realized that everyone is important and could be a key player at any given time. Don’t say they are out just yet. After all, they have made comebacks before. The Washington Wizards play at the Verizon Center starting on October 29, 2008.
