Don Brashear Fight 13

Don Brashear fight highlights

Washington Nationals Bullpen

On July 22nd, the Washington Nationals traded the very reliable, Jon Rauch, to the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Rauch had compiled an impressive record with the Nationals, having an ERA of only 2.98 along with 44 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings pitched.  Rauch had been moved to “closer” due to the injuries to Chad Cordero.

Last season, Rauch led the major leagues in appearances on the mound and struck out 71 batters while walking only 21.  The team is now looking to Rauch’s replacement, Joel Hanrahan, backed up by relief pitchers, Saul Rivera and Luis Avala.  Hanrahan is a hard thrower, tossing a high 90 m.p.h. fastball, and has held opponents to a .222 batting average.  The statistics on Hanrahan give the Nationals optimism that he can fill the role of closer.  The only uncertainty is Hanrahan’s limited time in the majors, having been a starting pitcher in the minor leagues until just last year.

Rivera is also being relied upon as a backup pitcher.  Rivera has four saves so far in his career but has lost eight opportunities to save during his short career, leaving him with a 3-4 record this year.

Pitcher Luis Ayala will see some action, as well.  His statistics are unimpressive so far, losing four opportunities to save and compiling a 1-6 record in the process.

The bullpen is a question, then, for the Nationals.  They’re counting on somewhat untested relievers to breach the gap.  Time will tell, of course, but the Nationals traded away a good pitcher in Rauch.
