Guzman Going Strong

With a 20-28 record through their first 48 games, the Washington Nationals are sitting in last place in the National League East and suffering through yet another disappointing season.  But shortstop Carlos Guzman has been a rare bright spot in an otherwise dismal display.

The 30-year-old Guzman is proving last year's strong showing was no fluke.  Guzman hit a career-high .328 in 46 games of action with the Nationals last season, including a torrid .373 in June.  Sadly, a torn thumb ligament forced him to the disabled list, ending what looked to be a very promising season.

Guzman started the 2008 campaign in fine form, ringing up a five-game hitting streak right out of the gate.  He's continued to be a steady swinger ever since, currently leading the Nationals with a .311 batting average.  Guzman has at least one hit in 15 of his past 16 games.  His best night at the plate came on May 3 when he went 4-for-5 in a 9-8 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Guzman consistent contact has also resulted in four homeruns, 19 RBIs, and a team-leading 33 runs scored.  His 33 runs are 11 more than his closest teammate.  Guzman also leads the team with 61 hits, 13 doubles, and two triples.

In the field, Guzman has played a solid shortstop, committing just four errors in 201 total chances for a .980 fielding percentage.  There hasn't been much to cheer about this season in Washington, but Guzman certainly is doing what he can.
