Redskin Rookie Misses Practice
The Washington Redskins welcomed their new crop of rookies to minicamp, and most of the recent draftees performed quite admirably on their first few days of work. The one exception was tight end Fred Davis.
Washington's second-round pick in the recent Draft, Davis was selected 48th overall out of the University of Southern California. Unfortunately, Davis' USC education must not have included instruction on how to set an alarm clock. As incredible as it seems, Davis overslept, missing practice and drawing the ire of new head coach Jim Zorn.
At first, the team was rather concerned when Davis failed to show up for work. Zorn and team management feared the worst. But after having security personnel confirm that the young man wasn't in any danger, their concern quickly turned to anger and frustration when they learned he had merely overslept. One of the knocks on Davis during his collegiate career was a questionable work ethic and attitude. Some wondered how important football was to the young man. This incident will hardly do anything to alleviate those doubts, as missing practice isn't exactly the way to win over coaches and teammates.
For his part, Zorn is doing his best to remain positive, believing Davis simply made a mistake and not seeing it as a continuation of his past behavior. Nothing is a mistake as long as a lesson is learned. Zorn is hoping Davis' error in judgment can serve as a lesson to the entire team, demonstrating a higher level of commitment is needed to become a champion.
