The hottest young star of the NBA has brought the Wizards not only considerable success on the court, but some of the most bizarre antics the team has seen in years. Dubbed "Gilbertology" coach Eddie Jordan, Gilbert Arenas's actions on and off the court have generated considerable discussion for their bizarre nature. But at the same time, his talents in the game have led fans to dismiss even the strangest events as the eccentricities of a star - if he can continue his amazing clutch performance, most feel, he could come to games wearing a chicken costume for all they care.
One of the earliest moments in Gilbertology came when Arenas was criticized for shooting too much as a point guard. He spent the next couple of games hardly shooting at all, and then stormed the court, scoring seemingly at will. He's been known to shower in full uniform, play video poker between halves, and bring powdered donuts - covered in baby powder - to teammates as a prank. On the road, he tends to stay in rather than go out with his teammates, and often spends his evenings watching infomercials and ordering any products that catch his eye.
One of his more recent eccentricities has been his modification of part of his home to simulate the reduced oxygen pressure found at high altitudes. Sleeping in a different environment, he feels, will increase his lung strength and his performance at normal oxygen levels. This, at least, isn't completely out of left field - athletes train under these sorts of conditions for specifically this reason. But it remains to be seen whether the high-altitude tent will remain a part of his regimen, or if it's simply another passing phase of Gilbertology.
