The Washington Redskins entered the 2008 NFL Draft looking to land a big wide receiver to compliment Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El. By the end of the Draft's first day, the Redskins had three new pass catchers, although none of them were the guy many fans desired.
The moment Chad Johnson voiced his displeasure with the Cincinnati Bengals, Redskins fans began dreaming of seeing the charismatic Pro-Bowl receiver in a Washington uniform. Johnson was certainly open to the idea, but Cincinnati appears determined to retain the disgruntled superstar, even turning down a rumored deal from the Redskins of two first-round draft picks.
Unable to land Johnson, the Redskins decided to trade out of the first round, sending their 21st-overall selection in the first round, as well as picks in the third and fifth rounds to the Atlanta Falcons for two second-rounders and a third-rounder. With three second-round picks at their disposal, the Redskins brought in two wide receivers and a tight end.
Washington used the 34th-overall pick to select receiver Devin Thomas (6-2, 212 pounds) of Michigan State. At 48th overall, the team found tight end Fred Davis (6-4, 247 pounds) of USC. They closed things out with receiver Malcolm Kelly (6-4, 219 pounds) of Oklahoma at 51st overall. The trio should fit beautifully in new coach Jim Zorn's West Coast Offense, and all three will certainly provide big targets for quarterback Jason Campbell.
